Rick Shaw, president and CEO of Awareity, has been selected as a speaker for the National Conference in Innovative Counseling Skills in Atlanta, GA. The conference features best practices from educators and other professionals working with youth. Some programs will be research-tested, while others will be promising, innovative approaches created by practicing professionals to help them better connect with different types of students.
Shaw’s presentation, School Safety: Preventing vs. Reacting (Because it CAN happen here), will discuss the challenges schools of all sizes are facing today (safety, bullying, cyber-drama, weapons, suicide, violence, drugs, etc.) and share real-world strategies for prevention. Attendees will learn how leading school districts are effectively handling the changing risks and needs of students and proactively connecting the dots, identifying threatening behaviors and intervening and preventing incidents and tragedies, while also reducing costs of training, documentation.
At the conference, Shaw will join David and Tina Long of Everything Starts With 1, who will speak about the suicide of their son Tyler. The Longs shared the story of their son’s death in the award-winning film “Bully.” They are now dedicated to raising awareness and helping schools save the lives of other children.
Tyler reported his bullying many times, but some records were never created. Bystanders also reported the bullying, but, again, some records were never found. School counselors admitted that they didn’t know how to help him. Shaw says people must raise awareness of students with disabilities. Are schools equipped to deal with students with disabilities? Is more training and awareness needed? Are current laws effective? These questions and others will be addressed from a parent’s real-life experience.
