The recipient of numerous professional, community, and government awards, Dr. Brooks is on the faculty of Harvard Medical School and is the former director of the Department of Psychology at McLean Hospital in Belmont, Mass. Dr. Brooks is a leading speaker on the themes of resilience, self-esteem, motivation, and family relationships. During the past 30 years, he has presented nationally and internationally to thousands of parents, educators, mental health professionals, and business people with a message based on encouragement, hope, and resilience. He is renowned for the warmth and humor he uses to bring his insights and anecdotes to life.
“Ryan’s Storyâ€
John Halligan
A father tells the riveting and emotional story of his 13-year old son’s suicide after being bullied and cyberbullied. The audience will get a look inside a family that wrestled with strategies to deal with the bullying. Parents and school staff will be inspired to approach the issue with more insight gained from this tragic story.
“Lessons Learned from School Violence: What Works, What Doesn’tâ€
Georgeann Rooney DiCaprio
This remarkable presentation provides clinical data coupled with the personal testimony of faith, courage, and determination. Georgeann Rooney DiCaprio, consultant with the U.S. Department of Education and a former threat assessment specialist with the U.S. Secret Service, will discuss research findings on 40 school shooting cases and on how school climate affected whether students with prior knowledge of an attack (called “bystandersâ€) came forward with information about planned school violence.
According to the Rooney- DiCaprio, “If the bystanders felt that there were trustworthy adults within the school community who would take them seriously and with whom they had a prior helpful relationship, they were inclined to come forward. On the other hand, without a collegial environment, bystanders chose to remain silent and in every case, a school shooting occurred.â€
Missy Jenkins Smith, co-author of I Choose to Be Happy and a school shooting survivor, was paralyzed from her chest down when, in 1997, Michael Carneal walked into the Heath High School lobby as she and 34 other students participated in a morning devotional. Never seeing her disability as an end, Jenkins Smith has a message of healing and forgiveness that encourages school staff and students to improve their communication with one another.
